14th June – Bob Fox

Irvine Folk Club welcomes Bob Fox Wednesday the 14th of June!

With almost 50 years on the British folk scene, Bob has been described as “possessing one of the best folksinging voices in England and he evokes the world of the miners and, in general, the songs of the northeast, with power and clarity.”

A truly adaptable performer, Bob exceeds as a solo artist as well as in his numerous collaborations. At various points throughout his career, Bob has paired up with North-Eastern singer and fiddle player, Tom McConville, former Lindisfarne front-man, Billy Mitchell, as well as forming the popular folk duo, Fox and Luckley, with former Hedgehog Pie singer, guitarist and bass guitarist, Stu Luckley. Fox and Luckley became a popular attraction on the UK folk scene and supported Richard and Linda Thompson and Ralph McTell on major British tours. After ceasing the partnership with Luckley in 1982 to pursue individual projects, Fox has maintained a successful career as a solo folk performer for over 30 years.

During the 1990s, together with Benny Graham he developed a multi-media show documenting the coal mining communities of Durham and Northumberland, which led to the CD “How Are You Off For Coals”, featuring a selection of mining songs. In 2006 Fox, along with a range of other top UK folk artists, was involved in providing performances for the “2006 Radio Ballads” commissioned by BBC Radio, and in 2009 he performed in the part of “Songman” in the highly acclaimed West End production of War Horse which played in the West End for 18 months and was subsequently toured for another eighteen months around Britain, Ireland and South Africa.

31st May – Dougie MacKenzie and Brian Miller

We look forward to welcoming Dougie MacKenzie and Brian Miller this Wednesday at the Irvine Folk Club!

From a background singing in Gaelic choirs and the famed Inverness Folk Song Club, Dougie MacKenzie has become known as one of Scotland’s best interpreters of traditional song. He is drawn to Scots ballad language and the stories it carries to us from the past, and has won singing competitions at many traditional folk festivals. His singing was nominated for an award in 2019’s MG Alba Trad Awards.

Brian Miller is one of Scotland’s foremost singers and guitarists, with extensive performing and recording credits, including with The Laggan and Arthur Johnstone, Swan Arcade, The Great Fife Road Show, Tom Paxton, The Singing Kettle, in Ian McCalman’s production ‘Far, Far from Ypres’ and with his daughter Siobhan Miller.

22nd March – Tommy Sands

Tommy makes a very welcome return to Irvine this Wednesday. His last tour was cancelled because of Covid. We look forward to listening to songs and stories as only he can tell. Tommy first visited Irvine in 1973 with the Sands Family. Some of you are too young to remember but those of us who can, remember some very happy times.

Burns Night

This Wednesday 25th January Irvine Folk Club will have a Burns Night. Our members will provide the entertainment – just a few songs and poems and a nice buffet. We will have a longer interval – a good opportunity to have some food and a good blether. Come along and enjoy a night of live music.

Stephen and Pernille Quigg

However we are delighted to say that Stephen and Pernille Quigg have stepped in and will be our guests next Wednesday.
We look forward to this.

We were all shocked to hear of the death of Rab Noakes. Rab was a good friend to Irvine and who can forget him representing Irvine Folk Club on the Quiz Show Eggheads. Our thoughts are with his family.
